Analyze Your Webpage

by Mark Perkins

Do you need some Free help finding out what to do to improve your site so that you get noticed?  This page has a listing of some web page analysis tool links that I have found to be useful in improving a web site.  Use these tools to find out how your web site stacks up against other sites, and how it will be viewed by web crawlers.  Then after you have made changes or improvements, check again to see how you are doing.  If you have suggestions or other helpful hints, please email me at mark@moreptiles.com and I will check them out and include them when appropriate.

Step 1.  Check your meta tags.  Web crawlers look at your meta tags to find out about your site.  Meta tags contain the key words that will be used when your site is listed in a web search.  The main meta tags are your page title, keywords, and description.  The following is an example of the part of the html code for a web page that contains the title, keyword, and description meta tags (highlighted in blue):
<head>
<meta name="keywords" content="reptiles,exchange links, reptile web site, web tools,moreptiles ">
<meta name="description" content="Guide to help get more hits on your reptile site, by Mark Perkins, analysis of meta tags, listing of sites to exchange links">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en-us">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 5.0">
<meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document">
<title>Get more hits on your reptile website</title>
<meta name="Microsoft Theme" content="expeditn 001, default">
</head>

Click on the following site to check the meta tags on your web site:  Free META Tag Analysis Tool  The tool will analyze your META Tags to make sure they are present, and check the word count, but it will not check to see if they are the best choice in words for your site.  Some advice that I have is to imagine what potential visitors to your site might search for.  Make sure that you include these words in your META Tags.  Also, make sure that you include all of the words and phrases in your META Tags in your web page.

Step 2. Check to see if your web site is listed with the major search engines.   I have found the following link to be helpful in checking your site against the different search engines.  http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/

Step 3. Check the popularity of your site with the Link Popularity Checker  You can also compare your site to a competitor's site to see how you match up.

Step 4. Find out how Google rates the importance of your site.  To do this, you must install the google tool bar on your internet browser. Here is a link to install the Google Toolbar  The tool bar includes the PageRank analysis of your site's importance.
